what is fused glass

Fused glass, also referred to as kiln-formed glass, is a medium that involves melting and fusing pieces of glass together in a kiln. This art form is extremely versatile and can be used to create a variety of products, such as jewellery and functional objects like bowls and vases. At Cairn Glass Art, we specialise in small art pieces.

The process of creating our fused glass begins with hand-carving unique designs. The glass is then fired in the kiln between 760 ºC to 820 ºC. As the glass is heated, it begins to soften and melt. The fuse temperature will determine the final look of the product, from Tack, Contour or Full fuse.

Type of glass kilns

There are a number of glass kilns available on the open market from large scale industrial types to the small home hobby types, but both perform the same function.
